University of the Arts, London

A range of projects undertaken for the Commercial Directorate

Project Description

Perhaps better known by its constituent colleges (i.e. Chelsea College of Art & Design, Central Saint Martin’s College of Art & Design, London College of Fashion, London College of Communication, Camberwell School of Art and Wimbledon School of Art) the University of the Arts (UAL) has a global reach in terms of its under-graduate intake, attracted by an alumni listing which includes countless ‘household name’ designers, architects and actors at the top of their respective professions.

UAL’s Commercial Director has retained Petersham Group to undertake a wide range of projects over a number of years. These have included:

i) Ad hoc advice on a series of student accommodation projects, involving both the development of new student accommodation facilities and contracts for additional accommodation provided by third party suppliers;

ii) Recruitment of a new Finance Director for Artscom Limited, the subsidiary commercial company that runs short-term arts courses at each of the UAL Colleges;

iii) Project managing two consultancy projects in China where UAL had been retained to provide design services to two leading Chinese garment manufacturers. The role included preparing detailed proposals to secure the projects and then supervising the contractual arrangements for the delivery of the projects;

iv) Appraisals of the development options for a number of existing properties within the UAL estate;

v) A review of the retail outlets (art shops) located within the individual colleges to determine whether they could and should be managed in-house or contracted out to an established operator;

vi) An independent review of a proposal to establish a holiday business to operate and promote short arts-based courses at a variety of holiday locations around the Mediterranean;

vii) An independent appraisal of a proposal to acquire a long established arts club in central London and to operate it within the UAL estate;

viii) A number of independent reviews of the Artscom businesses within individual UAL Colleges to determine how they could be developed further and to assist the management teams in the development of their individual business plans.
